A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to go visit the CERN LHC experiment (where all the fuss about the earth being eaten up by a man-made black-hole originated). Due to repairs from the malfunction last year, the detector was actually opened up and we were able to go down and look at it. This thing is huge! I needed a 16-photo panorama just to get this thing in the frame. You can see a person on a forklift on the lower left to get a sense of scale.
The CERN LHC experiment consists of a number of different sub-experiments and detectors. This one is the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector in France.
